Vaiko plea to Centre on Lankan Navy attack on fishermen
Chennai, Jan 12 (UNI) Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko told appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take effective steps to give a stern warning to the Sri Lankan Government to stop forthwith attacks on Tamil Nadu Fishermen by its Navy.
In a letter to Dr Singh, Mr Vaiko, referring to this evening's incident in which a Tamil Nadu fisherman was seriously wounded when the Lankan Navy opened fire at his boat off the coast of Rameswaram, blamed the UPA Government at the Centre for its 'attitude' towards the island nation by providing logistics and arms support due to which Tamil Nadu fishermen were ''attacked and killed by its Navy.'' He charged the Centre with wantonly shirking its basic duty of protecting the 'Indian citizens, the fishermen of Tamil Nadu.' Mr Vaiko, in the letter, a copy of which was released to the press tonight, said he was making repeated appeals to the Prime Minister for taking effective steps by giving a stern warning to the Sri Lankan Government to stop forthwith its Naval attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen.
