New Delhi, Jan 11 (UNI) The nation today paid tributes to late prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 42nd death anniversary.
Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union ministers and Members of Parliament attended a prayer meeting at his Samadhi at Vijay Ghat here.
Several programmes were held during the day to commemorate the event.
Lal Bahadur Shastri National Memorial Trust organised the 15th Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial lecture "Future direction for SC/ST community in the industrial development of India" by Dr Jamshad J Irani, Director, Tata Sons Limited and chairman, Board of Governors India Institute of managenent, Lucknow.
"SC/ST leaders say they do not require reservation but after attaining a certain degree they should not be discriminated on the bases of cast" Mr Irani said.
He further said, Employment, employer, enterpreneurship and education are the four Es important to sustain economic growth.
Mr Anil Shastri, holding Trustee, Lal Bhadur Shastri National Memorial Trust said," The economic growth cannot be sustained without social equality. Unfortunately, after 60 years of Indian Independence, 30 per cent of our people live below the poverty line".
