Madurai, Jan 10: The city police arrested a dreaded gangster, allegedly involved in murder and rape cases, after an encounter this evening.
City Police Commissioner K Nanda Balan told reporters that Selvam alias Varichur Selvam (40), wanted in 18 cases, including murder, rape and attempt to murder, was evading arrest for long.
He was also accused of 'operating kangaroo courts (katta panchayats) in and around the city.
The arrest followed a state-wide crack down on rowdies, which included the nabbing of another Madurai-based gangster Azhagar and his accomplices at Chennai recently.
Police were informed that the 'elusive' gangster was frequenting an electronics shop at Anna Nagar here and threatening its owner to replace the audio system in his car.
When he was confronted at the shop, he shoved down a police officer and managed to escape. However, police chased and nabbed him at Kuruvikkaran Road Checkpost, the Commissioner added.
