IWM Padmini Raut gets top billing in girls under-13 chess nationals

By Staff

Mumbai, Jan 9 (UNI) International Women Master Padmini Raut (Orissa) has been given the top billing in the Aditya Birla National Under-13 Girls Chess Championship to be held at Andheri Sports Complex here from tomorrow.

The nationals assume added significance as the Indian girls teams for the forthcoming Asian Youth Chess Championship (Teheran) and World Youth Chess Championship (Vietnam) will be selected on the basis of performance in this Championship.

Padmini Raut will be given a strong competition from the second seed Mohan Priya of Tamil Nadu, World Youth Bronze medalist Shalmali Gagare and former Asian champion Rucha Pujari (both Maharashtra) who are seeded third and fourth seeds.

However Padmini's clash with National Sub junior Girls Champion Shalmali Gagare who had pipped her for the World Youth medal in Turkey recently will be the one to watch out for.

For the top seed, this tournament gives her a chance to complete a hat-trick of National titles having won the under-13 Nationals in Howrah (2005) and Bhiwani (2006) respectively.

The Aditya Birla National Under 13 Girls Chess Championship is recognized by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) for its Elo Ratings.

More than hundred girls from all over the country will be seen in action in this tourney.
