Milan is an event which has been a biennial features at Port Blair since its inception in 1995. Milan 08 will present an opportunity to showcase the nation's growing strategic influences in the Indian Ocean Region. Milan 08 involves a congregation of the littoral Navies of the Bay of Bengal and Asia Pacific. ''The ships and delegations from the Navies of littoral countries have been invited to participate in the Milan 08. The participation from the 13 countries had been confirmed,'' Public Relations Officer of Andaman and Nicobar Command Lieutenant Mannu Virk told the sources.
The programme is for six days, comprising exercise interaction on processional and current issues, a city parade, and also ceremonial cultural, social and sporting events, Virk added.
Milan, the Hindi word for 'tryst' has found encouraging response over the years. Milan had been an effective forum to discuss common concerns in the Indian Ocean Region and help forge co-operation initiatives.
So far, five MILANs had been held between 1995 and 2006.
The event was not held in 2001 and 2005 as in 2001, the Indian Navy was hosting a significant international event - the International Fleet Review and in 2005, the region was recovering from the after effects of the Tsunami of 26 Dec 2004.
