Education must give equal opportunity to disadvantaged: Guv

Chandigarh, Jan 9 (UNI) Punjab Governor Gen (Retd) S F Rodrigues, emphasised that the education strategies must be directed to give equal opportunities for quality education to the disadvantaged and poor sections of society.

While presiding over the meeting of the Board of Governors of Punjab Public School (PPS), Nabha here today stressed that suitable steps must be taken to make the poor, equal partners in the process of social economic change and the academic curriculum must be combined with the values of humanism and secularism.

Gen Rodrigues said that a broad-based study, which Guru Nanak Dev University is carrying out through interactive process with distinguished people, has emphasised the need to revamp primary level education and motivate students with the focus on discipline in life, moral values and self-confidence.

He said that the Vice Chancellors of all Universities in the State have already activated a programme for making education more meaningful and purposeful, to produce the right kind of human resource and to enable students to successfully compete in the global arena.

General Rodrigues also appreciated the steps being taken by the Punjab Government in improving the quality of education in rural areas through the Adarsh School Scheme and said hoped that the process would move at much faster pace.

''We have also to institute an effective monitoring process for making our education system more responsive to the needs of the people,'' he said.
