Thane, Jan 9 (UNI) India has decided to give a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the kin of each of the fishermen from Gujarat and Maharashtra, held captive in the Pakistan jails for about last one year.
This information was given by MLC of the Teachers Constituency (Konkan), Sanjay Kelkar at a press conference here.
Mr Kelkar along with BJP Thane district president Chintaman Wanga who happens to be the former MP of Dahanu had taken up the cause of these fishermen with various agencies and finally succeeded in getting compensation to the families.
Mr Kelkar had even taken up the issue on the floor of the assembly in the last session and closely followed it up with the various authorities.
As a result of the follow up and close coordination the central government has decided to give the compensation to the families of the fishermen, who are still being held captive in Pakistan.
The Marine and Products Export Development Authority has been entrusted with the task of giving the compensation.
The fund will be allocated from the Prime Ministers National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to extend the assistance to next of kin of the captive fishermen. The manner of assistance will be as indicated in the order of the Department of Commerce New Delhi.
It was stated that based on the list of 298 captive fishermen received from the Ministry of Home Affairs/Ministry of External Affairs, MPEDA, RO Veraval had already carried out an exercise in the state of Gujarat to identify the next of Kin of the captive.
In this process of verification, it was found out that 20 captives were from Maharashtra.
The Mumbai office has been directed to identify the next of the kin of the captive from Maharashtra with the support of state Government and the village panchayat and obtain necessary documentary evidences to ascertain the genuiness.
The Department of Commerce has issued an order stating that an out-right grant of Rs 30,000 for smaller fishing boats and an amount of Rs 5 lakhs for trawlers, would be provided to the owners of the seized boats/trawlers based on the type of fishing craft seized.
