Chandigarh make clean sweep in softball

Chandigarh, Jan 9 (UNI) Hosts Chandigarh made a clean sweep by winning the softball titles in the Under-14, under-17 and under-19 boys in the 53rd National School Games being conducted by the Chandigarh Education Department.

In the under-14 final today Chandigarh beat Punjab by 3-1 and in the U-17 boys final the hosts beat Punjab by 2-0. Chandigarh defeated Chattisgarh by 4-2 in the U-19 category final.

Chandigarh will meet Punjab in the boys Under-17 hockey final.

Chandigarh will meet Haryana in the girls Under-17 final. Both finals will be played at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium. For the third place Punjab girls will face HP while in the boys' category Orissa secured 3 rd position by beating Haryana by 3-1.

Rain disrupted the schedule today.

In the boys hockey semi-final matches, Chandigarh blanked Haryana by 5-0 and Punjab ended the challenge of Orissa by 3-1 and reached the final. Orissa won the toss. Barkat Singh of Punjab scored the first goal for his team in the 7 th minute by converting a penalty corner. Deepak Kumar of Punjab scored two consecutive goals at the 9 th and 17th minutes. Orissa reduced the margin in the 40 th minute when Aijub Ekka scored field goal.

In the girls hockey semi-finals, Haryana routed Punjab by 6-0 and Chandigarh beat HP by 3-0.
