UDP asks Chief Minister to convene cabinet on power project
Shillong, Jan 8 (UNI) The United Democratic Party, a key ally of the Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, today urged Chief Minister D D Lapang to convene a cabinet meeting to discuss power projects.
'' The Cabinet must sit and decide on this contentious issue,'' UDP President and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy told UNI here.
Opposing the handing over of six power projects to private companies, Dr Roy said the Cabinet had overlooked the fact that as per the State Power Policy, any power project worth over 100 MW should be handed over to private firms through international competitive bidding.
The UDP Chief said the Cabinet had taken the decision on December 7 in absence of majority of the ministers without even giving time to study them.
Earlier, Mr Lapang had promised a cabinet sitting which is yet to materialize.
Meanwhile, the youth wing of Nationalist Congress Party have threatened to agitate in protest against the ruling Congress-led government's decision to handover power projects to private companies.
