Mercury shoots up in Northwest, nationwide toll mounts to 106
New Delhi, Jan 8 (UNI) After an intense cold wave, the mercury today shot up across North India with an increase in day and night temperatures.
However, the Kashmir valley was cut off once again from the rest of the country due to heavy snowfall and landslides.
Meanwhile, the nationwide toll due to cold wave mounted to 106 with five more deaths reported from Uttar Pradesh, including four in Mainpuri and one in Robertsganj, and one from the Kashmir valley.
The toll includes 85 in Uttar Pradesh, nine in Gujarat, four each in Bihar and Punjab, two each in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
Heavy rains triggered landslides at Penthal this afternoon, resulting in the on the spot death of a passenger who was travelling in a vehicle from Srinagar to Jammu.
