Madurai, Jan 8: CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat today called upon the leftists, secular and democratic forces to work in tandem for a third alternative at national-level. Inaugurating the 19th state-level party conference here, Mr Karat said with the Congress and the BJP failing to address the issues of the common man, a third alternative was the need of the hour.
''Alternative to the Congress and the BJP will not come overnight. The party workers should work hard for the cause of the working class and common man,'' he said. Holding the UPA government responsible for the present ''agrarian crisis'', he said ''instead of tackling the agrarian crisis and ensuring food security, the government had aggravated it.'' ''We are now depending on wheat imports. The Public Distribution System (PDS) had been dismantled in many states. The government had not ensured availability of essential commodities at a cheaper price,'' he said.
The government's claim of GDP touching nine per cent had only helped increase in the number of dollar billionaires in India from 26 to 40, he added.
