Chennai, Jan 8 (UNI) Alleging that farmers in Tamil Nadu were badly affected due to the damage caused to paddy by storing them in open place in procurement centres, Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa today urged the DMK Government to pay adequate compensation to the peasants.
In a statement here, she blamed the government of being ''inactive'' to the interests of the farmers by storing the paddy bags at open places in the procurement centres.
Alleging that the government had not provided roofs at the regulatory markets to store the paddy bags, Ms Jayalalithaa said despite the Met office predicting rains, the government had not taken any precautionary steps to safeguard the paddy bags, stored in open space at Aragandanallur procurement centre in Villupuram district.
The case was similar in other parts of the state, she said and added that the price of each bag would come down by Rs 100 while selling in open market, putting the farmers to hardships.
She demanded that the government should immediately take steps to provide roofs at the regulatory markets.
