Jalandhar, Jan 8 (UNI) The situation in the Central Jail here today limped back to normal, after yesterday's mayhem by the prisoners.
The agitated prisoners set certain parts of the jail on fire during which, besides other property some jail records were also damaged.
Punjab Jails AIG Jagjit Singh, who was given the temporary charge of the jail, after Jail Superintendent Satpal Singh was suspended for derelition of duty, disclosed that Patiala based Jail Training School principal G S Sidhu has been appointed as the new Jail Superintendent of the Central Jail and he would take over the charge within a couple of days.
He said a general FIR has been registered against prisoners for arson and vandalism and responsibility would be fixed after the report of the magisterial inquiry.
He informed that as per the daily routine, the prisoners had their meals in the morning and attended to the daily chores. Nearly 100 prisoners were taken to the courts for hearings and many were allowed to meet their relatives, he added.
On the jail property damaged during rioting, he said that it would take atleast two to three days to assess the exent of damage done by the inmates.
Despite overcrowding, he said that there was no plan to shift any prisoner to any other jail in the state.
