Jalandhar, Jan 7 (UNI) An undertrial was injured in police firing in the Central Jail here today, when prisoners tried to take control of the jail.
The prisoners also set some parts of the jail on fire with the help of cooking gas cylinders, damaging kitcken, factory, laboratory and dispencery and also vadalised the other property inside the jail.
The prisoners resorted to arson, when jail authorities tried to stop the inmates from observing hunger strike, over the mismanagement and high- handedness of the jail officials in not providing required facilities to the inmates.
Police fired gunshots in the air along with tear gas shells to stop the inmates. In the firing, one prisoner, identified as Kuldeep Singh, was injured, who was immediately rushed to civil hospital for treatment.
It took more than three hours to control the situation when Deputy Commissioner AS Pannu and SSP Arpit Shukla went in to speak to the prisoners' representatives and assured them of action against the erring jail officials.
Meanwhile, Jail Superintendent Satpal Singh had been suspended and AIG, Jails, Punjab had taken over the charge of the jail. A 10-member committee of high officials had been formed to speak to the representatives of the prisoners to know their problems and a magisterial inquiry had also been ordered.
