India calls for a change in umpires

Sydney, Jan 6 (UNI) Infuriared over crass umpiring decision in the second Test at SCG, which eventually costed them the match, Indian team management has called for replacing umpires in the third Test.

Bucknor is due to stand in next week's third Test in Perth.

Indian team manager Chetan Chauhan confirmed the tourists would lodge an official complaint.

''We don't want these (Steve Bucknor and Mark Benson) umpires in the future matches. Incompetent umpring has cost us this match,'' Chauhan remarked angrily.

''I have been in contact with the BCCI and that they are lodging a strong protest with the ICC so that some of the incompetent umpires of this match do not umpire for the rest of the series,'' he said.

''The umpiring was flawed. They (the team) are upset, a lot of decisions have gone against us, a few went against the Australians, as well, but it really affected us.

''If we had got 50 per cent of the decisions the result would have been different.

''We are not saying this because we have lost the game. It was for everybody to see.'' Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) officials last week revealed they would lodge a complaint, but they are so riled now that they want Benson and Bucknor sacked. The Test match was dogged by a series of umpiring blunders that reignited the debate about whether the match officials should be allowed to make greater use of technology to ensure they make the right decisions.

Both teams were adversely affected by wrong calls but the most significant one occurred when on the very first day Aussie all-rounder Andrew Symonds was given not out by West Indian umpire Steve Bucknor when the player edged a delivery by young Indian paceman Ishant Sharma.

Symonds, who later admitted he had nicked the ball, was on 30 at that time but went on to make another 132 runs to finish unbeaten on 162.

On the last day of the second Test India lost the wickets of Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly by dubious umpiring decisions which inturn turned the table against the host, who eventually won the match and with it regained the Border Gavaskar trophy.
