Rain likely to occur in North West plains

Chandigarh, Jan 6 (UNI) The mercury further rose in the north-west plains today following a cloudy weather, even as parts of Punjab and Haryana had traces of rainfall which is considered good for the wheat crop.

The Holy City of Amritsar, which recorded a minimum temperature of 5.2 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal, experieced light showers early this morning. The city recorded 0.2 mm rain and even though the sun made a brief appearance in the afternoon, the Met office here has predicted more rain in the next 24 hours in the border regions.

Chandigarh, Ambala and a few other places in the plains reported traces of rain in the early hours.

In Himachal Pradesh, the high altitude areas in tribal district of Lahaul Spiti and Pangi and Bharmour areas in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh had another spell of snowfall since last night.

The entire tribal belt was under the impact of freezing cold wave conditions with Kalpa in tribal Kinnaur disrict recording the minimum temperature at minus 1.0 degree celsius.

The 13,050-foot high Rohtang Pass, gateway to Lahaul Spiti district, also had moderate snowfall, intensifying cold conditions in Kullu district.

However, the minimum temperature rose to 4.8 degrees at Bhuntar in Kullu district while Sundernagar in Mandi district registered 4.3 degrees Celsius and Una showed a drop to 2.6 degrees. In the capital resort of Shimla the minimum was 4.5 degrees, three degrees above normal.

The minimum stayed above normal at most places in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh in the wake of cloudy weather. However, chilly winds swept most parts of the region as the sun played hide and seek during the day.

In Punjab, the minimum rose at Ludhiana and Patiala and was recorded at 8.9 degrees and 10.7 degrees respectively.

The night temperatures also increased in Haryana with Karnal showing 10.2 degrees, Ambala 8.7 degrees, Hisar 9.2 degrees and Narnaul 7.3 degrees.

Dense clouds enveloped Chandigarh and its adjoining areas in Punjab and Haryana in the morning. The city recorded the minimum at 9.0 degrees, three degrees above normal.

The Weather office predicted light to moderate rain or snow at few places in Himachal Pradesh and light to moderate rain at a few places in Punjab and isolated places in north Haryana during the next 48 hours.
