Addressing a rally after laying the foundation stone of a project to facilitate widening of Road No 66 in Jafrabad, East Delhi, aimed at providing smooth flow of traffic and relief to lakhs of people who have been facing difficulties due to long traffic jams, Ms Dikshit said all efforts would be made for in situ rehabilitation of JJ clusters.

While making reference to an ambitious programme of the government under which four lakh low cost dwelling units will be constructed in various parts of Delhi, Ms Dikshit said government was keen to rehabilitate residents of JJ clusters and slums at the very same place in multi-storey apartments as soon as possible.

She said the Union government would provide a grant of Rs one lakh for each low cost house in a well-developed and well-connected colony. This would make Delhi a slum-free city.

Ms Dikshit said low cost houses with two rooms, kitchen and toilet would cost Rs 2 lakh whereas a dwelling unit with one room and other similar facilities would cost Rs 1.7 lakh.

The allotees would have to bear a meagre amount of Rs 30 to 40 thousand, which would be provided by banks on concessional rate of interest and easy repayment terms.

Addressing the mammoth public gathering, Ms Dikshit said development in East Delhi would be further accelerated to provide all basic amenities to residents of Trans Yamuna, which inhabits a large number of poor and residents of slums and JJ clusters.

The pace of development in East Delhi would turn it into a most developed part of the Capital city. The Delhi government has chalked out a comprehensive plan to make Trans Yamuna area a well-planned green enclave, which would provide a unique recognition to it, she added.
