Bhubaneswar, Jan 05 (UNI) National Integration Council(NIC) member John Dayal today demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting Supreme Court Judge into the Kandhmal communal violence in Orissa.
Mr Dayal, who visited the strife-torn Kandhmal, heading a three member fact-finding team, told newspersons here that Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik should approach the Apex Court Chief Justice to allow a Supreme court judge to hold the inquiry instead of a retired high court judge.
In a white paper on the Kandhmal violence, to be submitted to Orissa Governor M C Bhandare and the Chief Minister, the human right activists alleged that the violence in Kandhmal was ''premediated, pre-planned and handiwork of a well disciplined group''.
He, however, admitted that some Christians were involved in the burning of Hindu houses in retaliation in Brahmanigaon village and condemned such act, stating that such action was highly despicable and must be strongly condemned.
Mr Dayal said the role of the RSS, Bajrang Dal, the VHP and the Banabasi Kalyan Ashram should be the subject of an intensive investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation to assist the judicial inquiry by a Supreme Court judge.
The whitepaper, released at the news conference, said while the Christian community and its institutions were targetted for more than 48 hours, the anti-Hindu violence in Brahmnigaon took place more than 60 hours after the first church was burnt down.
