Panaji, Jan 4 (UNI) Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today emphasised that the UPA government was committed to providing electricity to all villages by next year and supply on demand by 2012 with the capacity addition galloping.

Laying the foundation stone for a Rs 40 crore 220 KV substation at Amona, that would be the first automated transnmission system in Goa, the Minister said the power transmission by the end of the ongoing 11th plan period would peak upto 37,000 mega watt from the four corridors of the power grid as against the current 17,00 MW with rapid improvement in transmission sector.

He said the Centre was poised to provide capacity addition of 80,00 MW by the 11th plan period as against 54,000 MW done so far by the end of the 10th plan period.

Respective state governments had also been advised to add to their capacity addition by improving generation. With this, the current capacity addition since the eigth plan period touched 60,000 MW, he said. The shortage, however, continued to be 20,000 MW, he said.

The Centre, Mr Shinde said, would support Goa to ensure that it would have an uninterrupted and adequate power supply for being an international tourist destination.

Earlier, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat asked for allocation of power supply from neighbouring Kaiga atomic power plant for Goa to meet the galloping demand.

State Power Minister Alexeio Sequeira sought adequate sanction for underground power cabling works and immediate allocation of 60 MW power to Goa.

Mr R P Singh, chairman-cum-managing director of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, which undertook the works, said the new substation at Amona would meet the power requirements of central rural areas of Goa, besides the demand of the mining industry.

It had so far undertaken Rs 170 crore worth of underground cabling works in Goa which, he said, would meet adequate power supply within five years at the current pace of works.

Later, Mr Shinde, along with Mr Kamat, addressed the inaugural session of the three-day Global Marathi Convention at Kala Academy.
