Rourkela, Jan 3 (UNI) The Rourkela Steel Plant(RSP), a unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited, registered an all time best production record during April-December compared to any financial year since its inception.
RSP ended the April-December period of the current fiscal with all time best performance in major production centres.
Plant sources said the production in major areas confirmed to the targets envisaged in the Annual Performance Plan for this period.
While sinter output reached 2.57 million tons (MT), hot metal crossed 1.64 MT, crude steel touched 1.54 MT and saleable steel surpassed 1.51 MT.
Apart from registering growth over the corresponding period of last year these unprecedented volume of production represent extraordinary capacity utilization of 111, 113, 107 and 120 per cent respectively. Incidentally, despatch of steel at more than 1.47 MT too was the highest for any period of April-December since inception of the plant.
In the finishing mills also, the steel plant set up best ever performance for the period April-September by establishing combined slab rolling of more than 1.61 MT in its Hot Strip Mill and Plate Mill. As a result the first nine months of the fiscal witnessed highest ever performance in Plate Mill Plates with 3,60,289 tons, Hot Rolled Coils (for sale) with 5,64,794 tons, Hot Rolled Plates with 2,31,383 tons and CRNO steel from Silicon Steel Mill of 60,061 tons.
With record volumes of production, RSP also achieved all time best figures in techno economic parameters like Coal to Hot Metal Ratio in the Blast Furnaces, Lining Life in LD Converters in Steel Melting Shops besides Specific Energy consumption in crude steel production.
This has contributed significantly in reducing production cost and enhanced profitability.
During December 2007, impressive production was recorded in Sinter (3,03,044 tonnes), Hot Metal (1,95,083 tonnes) and Crude Steel (1,85,434 tonnes) which corresponded to capacity utilization of 116 per cent for Sinter, 115 per cent for Hot Metal and 115 per cent for Crude Steel, besides 128 per cent for Saleable Steel.
The RSP collective is entering Q4 of fiscal 2007-08 with the confidence of not only surpassing its Annual Rated Capacity for the second time but also of registering best ever annual production figures since inception of the steel plant, RSP sources here said.
