Nashik, Jan 3 (UNI) The issue of onion prices is blowing hot day by day in this district, as onion producing farmers are agitating against the decline in prices, nearly every day.
As part of the agitation, ''Rasta Roko'' agitations and demonstrations were held in Manmad and Chandwad towns of the district today.
According to sources, as many as 800 farmers participated in the ''Rasta Roko'' agitation at Manmad-Malegaon square on Indore-Pune National Highway, near Manmad, farmers threw onions on the streets.
The agitation was led by Shiv Sena's North Maharashtra leader Altaf Khan, Shiv Sena district chief Jayant Dinde, Nandgaon MLA Sanjay Pawar and others.
The farmers along with the leaders blocked the road. The agitation started at around 1115 hrs and lasted for one and a half hours.
Minimum of Rs 800 for No 1 quality onions and Rs 600 to Rs 700 for No 2 quality onions, availability of wagons for traders to supply onions were some of the important demands of the farmers. The agitators were arrested and later released.
According to the latest reports, the ''Rasta Roko'' agitation at Chandwad square on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway No 3 began at around 1330 hrs. With this agitation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also entered in the fight for farmers' cause. The agitation was led by BJP MP from Malegaon Harishchandra Chavan.
Minimum of Rs 1000 per quintal onions and immediate availability of wagons for transportation of onions were some of the important demands of the agitators at Chanwad.
Meanwhile, along with Yeola onion producing farmers also held ''Rasta Roko'' agitation at Satana near the bus stand for around one and half hour. They carried out a morcha and gave a memorandum of their demands to Tehsildar Prakash Patil, Deputy Senior Police Sanjay Barkand and Lasalgaon APMC secretary B Y Holkar. A gate meeting was also held on the occasion.
