Chennai, Jan 3 (UNI) About 1,000 activists of the CPI(M), including 350 women, led by Perambur MLA Mahendiran, today staged a 'road blockade' agitation at Vyasarpadi in North Chennai, demanding construction of a flyover to ease traffic congestion in the area.

According to reports, more than six lakh people pass through the subway on Kolkata National Highway near Vysarpadi Railway Station everyday leading to congestion.

As their long-felt demand of construction of a flyover was not met by the government, locals, led by Mr Mahendiran, today blocked the traffic on the arterial road for nearly an hour.

Efforts by the police officials to pacify the protestors went in vain. Following this, they were taken into custody and housed in a marriage hall. They were, however, released later.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Mahendiran said the agitation would be intensified if the government did not come out with a concrete proposal in this regard before January 12.

''At a time when a number of flyovers are being constructed in south Chennai, the northern part of the city is continuosly neglected by the authorities,'' he alleged.
