Thane, Jan 3 (UNI) In a bid to curb rising incidence of prostitution in the Khari locality of Bhayander town in the district, a group of women affiliated to the local BJP unit and female corporators of the Mira-Bhayander Corporation allegedly beat up the prostitutes today.
According to reports available with the district headquarters here, the women in large number took the law into their own hands and bashed up the prostitutes in the locaity.
The women resorted to beating following the lack of action by the authorities, as the people in the locality had objected on numerous occasions against the nuisance.
Earlier, about a year back, a group of Shiv Sainiks had in a similar manner thrashed prostitues in the Wagle Estate locality of Thane city. Following which, Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil had issued a stern warning, saying that action would be taken against those who take law into their own hands.
Mr Patil had stated that such activities should be brought to the notice of the local police and if they did not act, then the matter should be brought to his attention.
