New Delhi, Jan 2: A day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati held lapses on part of the CRPF responsible for the fidayeen attack on its camp in Rampur, the Congress today said the "blame game" of the state government would not facilitate the joint efforts to tackle the terrorist attacks effectively.
"The fact is that the terrorists are finding UP as a soft target as also a vulnerable region for their attacks. The state government has the basic and fundamental responsibility to handle law and order situation in a system where there is no federal law to deal with such crimes," AICC Spokesman Jayanthi Natarajan told mediapersons here.
Coming down heavily on the UP Chief Minister, she said Ms Mayawati appeared to be preoccupied with travelling around the country in order to build up her party.
"In the process, she should not lose her focus on the primary and pressing importance of governance of a large and sensitive state like Uttar Pradesh." Maintaining that the Union government had a role to play to provide necessary intelligence inputs collected by them and also provide logistic and para military forces or any other necessary support to the state government, she said, "unless, the state government tightens and firms up measures for security, the situation cannot be brought under control." Ms Natarajan said the basic intelligence information would have to be collected and acted upon by the state government. If there was any gap, they should always seek back up from the Central agencies.
In this context, she said when the terrorist outfits were active outside Jammu and Kashmir, the state government should be all the more careful in taking steps for building their capacity to effectively tackle terrorism.
"The feeling of helplessness will not help a state government to discharge its basic responsibilities," Ms Natarajan said , adding that "unless precautions are taken, the Central agencies alone cannot tackle effectively such situations in the national security domain." She said it was better that the blame game (by Ms Mayawati) was stopped and the authorities concerned take security measures seriously.
The Congress Party condemned the cowardly terror attack on the Rampur CRPF camp, and said this was another attempt by terrorists to destabilise peace in the region.
