Chennai, Jan 2 (UNI) In matches akin to Alfrod Hitchcock thrillers, fourth seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia and defending champion Xavier Malisse of Belgium entered the quarterfinals of the Chenani Open 2008 ATP tennis tournament here tonight.
While the fourth seeded Russian put behind his inconsistent form to prevail over Edouard Roger Vasselin of France 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 in 108 minutes, the reigning champion Malisse overcame a first set resistance before showing the exit door for sixth seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria 7-6(3), 6-2, in what ended as a whimper after a close first set.
In other second round match, unseeded players Kristof Vliegen of Belgium and Florent Serra of France slugged it out from the baseline in which the latter triumphed 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(3) in three tight sets to earn a slot in the last eight stage.
Meanwhile, the doubles challenge in India ended with the exit of Mustafa Ghouse and Karan Rastogi losing to the scratch combination of Marin Cic of Croatia and Aisam-ul-Haq of Pakistan 4-6, 6-7(1) at the adjacent courts tonight.
