Kalam to deliver BU convocation address on Jan 19
Bangalore, Jan 2 (UNI) Former President A P J Abdul Kalam will deliver the convocation address of the Bangalore University on January 19, its Vice-Chancellor H A Ranganath said today.
Briefing newspersons here, he said Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan, Scientist Govardhan, Ex-Mayor G Narayan and former BU VC T R Jayaraman would be honoured with honorary doctorates during the Convocation.
Earlier, Prof Ranganath released a calendar with the theme 'Mahatma - True Spirit of a Nation', brought out by the University's 'Centre for Gandhian Studies' and the university calendar brought out by 'Prasaranga'.
He said the uniqueness of the Gandhi Calendar was the rare black-and-white photographs of Mahatma in unusual moods. Besides, the landmarks in Gandhi's life were highlighted in the calendar.
The pages also contained 'Quotable Quotes' of Mahatma. This was the fourth year in succession that the Centre was bringing out the calendar.
Prof Ranganath said it was proposed to hold a two-day workshop on 'The Gandhian Legacy' from January 29 to mark the 60th anniversary of the martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30.
During the workshop, 26 booklets on 'Gandhians in our Midst', released from time to time by the Centre, featuring noted personalities including Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, Environmentalist Medha Patkar and Rajendra Singh, would be published in book format.
He said it was also proposed to hold a two-day national seminar on 'Peace building and Sustainable Development' in February and a three-day international workshop on 'Moving from a Culture of Rights to a Culture of Responsibilities' in collaboration with France-based Alliance for a Responsible and Peaceful World, in March.
