Gurgaon to have a Municipal Corporation

Chandigarh, Jan 2 (UNI) The Haryana Cabinet today gave its approval to create a Municipal Corporation for Gurgaon.

A decision to this effect was taken ''in view of the fact that Gurgaon has moved in a significant way towards becoming a world class city,'' Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda told reporters after a cabinet meeting here.

''It is a fast developing town and located adjacent to New Delhi. It has also emerged as a major developing industrial hub,'' he said.

The population in the existing municipal council was 2.02 lakh as per census 2001, but the urban agglomeration was more than 13.50 lakh after clubbing newly developed sectors of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation's (HSIIDC) complex in Manesar and area developed by private developers.

The total estimated budget of the Municipal Corporation, Gurgaon would be Rs 315 crore. The existing staff of Municipal Council, Gurgaon would merge with that of the Corporation.

The Municipal Corporation would comprise whole of geographical area falling under the area already notified under Gurgaon's final development plan, 2021.

The Municipal Corporation would provide a unitary authority to the existing organisations like HUDA, HSIIDC and Municipal Corporation itself. It would also encourage unified planning and delivery of city services to various urban units already existing within Gurgaon like DLF township, HUDA sectors, Manesar township and Sushant Ansal City.

The Constitution of the Corporation would provide for higher level of services, more qualified personnel at the top management level, town planning, finance and engineering levels, Mr Hooda said.

''By getting a million plus town status, Gurgaon town is likely to get included under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission launched by Central government for integrated development of million plus towns. Special financial assistance can be availed from the Centre for the development of Gurgaon town,'' he said.

Also, there would be integrated development, better civic amenities and the people living in villages adjacent to Gurgaon town would also get covered under the Corporation and have better civic amenities, he added.
