Shillong, Jan 1 (UNI) Shillongites literally shook and shivered on New Year's Day.

Although, this year's celebration was similar to any other year, however, a group of revellers decided to use the day differently.

Sangmein river at an altitude of 1800 meters surrounded by conifer forests, the gusty wind plummeted the mercury further down in the hilly terrain.

"It is good for the mind, body and spirit. It is highly recommended for those who want to remain forever young,'' Michael Syiem (51) told UNI after emerging from the freezing cold water and shivering at the stroke of midnight.

Exactly, after clock struck for new year, if late night revellers in Shillong thought of relaxing in the bed, they were in for a rude "shock".

A slight intensity earthquake shook Shillongites in the afternoon out of their slumber.

The tremor rocked the state capital at 1231 hours (IST) and measured a magnitude of 3.9 on the Richter scale. The epicentre about 200 km away from Central Seismological Observatory (CSO) at Upper Shillong.
