Patna, Jan 1 (UNI) Maoist guerillas gunned down four Special Auxiliary Police(SAP) jawans today at Rishikunj of Munger district, marring an otherwise joyful new year celer bration in Bihar.
The four SAP jawans fell victim to bullets fired by Maoist guerillas, when they were on their way to provide security cover to new year revellers at Rishikunj picnic spot in Munger. The retreating guerillas seized AK-47 rifles from the slain security personnel.
Braving the chilly wind here at the state capital city, thousands of people thronged Sanjay Gandhi Botanical garden and other picnic spots to enjoy the first day of 2008.
The district administration had made elaborate security arrangement to check any possible unruly behaviour by new year revellers. Besides women constables, security personnel had also been deputed at various picnic spots to prevent any untoward incidents.
Apart from the Botanical garden, Museum premises, Kumhrar, several islands in various rivers, including the holy Ganges were other favorite spots for the revellers this year.
In some of the most posh hotels in Patna, special arrangements had been made to mark the dawn of the new year. Apart from delicious dishes, music programmes had also been organised with participation of some of the well known artistes at discount price tags remained the attraction of new year revellers.
Reports reaching from other parts of the state indicated that the new year celebrations remained incident free.
