Indian players run riot in Scottish Tourney

Chennai, Dec 31 (UNI) Indian players ushered in the New Year in style annexing four titles at the Scottish Junior Open Squash Championship and taking two runners-up positions at Edinburgh today.

According to National Coach Cyrus Poncha, Harinderpal Singh, playing his last year in the juniors, gave a dazzling display to win the Boys Under-19 title with a 9-4, 4-9, 9-1, 10-8 win over Kelly Shannon of Canada.

Bringing more New Year gifts to India was Anwesha Reddy who bagged the Under-17 Girls title for her first European crown in her fledgling career with a 9-3, 9-5, 10-8 win over top seed Kimberley Hay of England.

Mahesh Mangaonkar and Sandeep Ramachandran, in his maiden international event, swelled the Indian kitty bagging the Under-15 and Under-11 titles respectively.

In an enthralling final, Harinder came up with exceptional winners in the front court and showcased his brilliant retrieving skills.

Kelly kept the pace of the game at a high tempo and won the second game to level the match. But Harinder came back strongly, running up a 8-0 lead in the third before knotting up the match with ease.

Harinder became only the second Indian to win the Under-19 title after Siddharth Suchde in 2003.

However, a clean sweep was not possible as Aparajitha and Karan lost in straight games to Tamika Saxby and Andrew Schnell respectively.
