Pune, Dec 31 (UNI) The High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), one of the prestigious laboratories under the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), will launch its centenary celebrations from tomorrow.
Established in 1908 as Chemicals Examiners Office at Nainital, the HEMRL has undergone radical changes in its charter of duties, responsibilities and locations to finally emerge as a full fledged laboratory by the name Explosives Research and Development Laboratory (ERDL) in 1963, dedicated exclusively to Research and Development in the areas of High Energy Materials (HEM).
The laboratory is the only one in the country dealing with the entire spectrum of high energy materials starting from small arms, mortars, high energy solid propellants for guns, rockets, missiles, high explosives, pyrotechnics and illuminating composition.
In view of the specialized nature of the job pertaining to high broad spectrum of high energy materials it was rechristened as the High Energy Materials Lab (HEMRL).
The HEMRL handles different projects for all the three services including the Army, Navy and the Air Force and other organizations like the Home Ministry, BARC, Paramilitary forces, with a strength of 1,050 personnel comprising of Chemists, Physicists, Mathematicians, Computer and Management Professionals, Chemical, Mechanical, Electronic Engineers, Environmental and Safety Experts, distributed over Scientific, Technical, Engineering, Industrial, Management and Administration Core Groups, an official press release stated.
