New Delhi, Dec 31 (UNI) Notwithstanding the biting cold, New Year revellers thronged the city's streets and markets to ring in the year 2008.

Markets, decorated with lights, wore a festive look as shoppers rushed in for their final purchases and merry-makers chilled out at eternal favourite spots Connaught Place and India Gate.

Janpath, Sarojini Nagar, Chandni Chowk, Lajpat Nagar and Karol Bagh witnessed an extra rush of buyers and enthusiasts wanting to soak in the fun.

People made a beeline for eateries--both well known and lesser known--to celebrate with their family and friends the new year in accordance with their budget.

Five-star hotels threw open their reception halls and shopping malls had a varied choice of programmes to add to the New Year bash while restaurants and pubs added special items on their menu for the connoisseur.

Bollywood actors, singers and dance troupes performing at various hotels and discotheques promise to usher in the New year with a big bang. Even television channels had a wide range of entertaining programmes to swing in the new year.

To check the rush of revellers and tackle trouble-mongers, police have deployed a large contingent of security personnel on duty.

Special teams have been made to check drunken driving and traffic violations.

Traffic had been regulated and restricted at several places.

Connaught Place had been made a no vehicle zone after 1930 hrs.

Delhi Metro had also curtailed its services to ensure the safety of commuters and the Metro property from incidents of vandalism.
