Apparel training centre opened at Perambalur

Perambalur, Dec 31 (UNI) Union Information Technology and Communication Minister A Raja inaugurated the fifth Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) here yesterday to empower women and employable youth.

Sponsored by the Apparel Export Promotion Council under the Union Textiles ministry , the Perambalur facility is the 38th such centre in the country. The four other centres in Tamil Nadu are at Tirupur, Dharmapuri, and Guindy and Mogappair in Chennai.

The centre, commissioned on the premises of the Poomalai Marketing Complex with machinery and teaching equipment worth Rs 30 lakh provided by the district administration, will offer sewing machine operator training to suit the needs of readymade garment manufacturers in Tirupur, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem and Chennai.

Mr B V Somasekar, Deputy Director General, ATDC, said the facility would train 600 to 1,000 people in 2008 in batches of 60.

While the district administration will spend Rs 1,600 per trainee, besides providing training kit and offering daily stipend of Rs 40 each, the centre will bear the recurring expenses.

Tirupur Exporters' Association President and AEPC Technical Sub-Committee Chairman A Sakthivel said the trainees have been guaranteed jobs with monthly earnings of up to Rs 7,000.
