New Delhi, Dec 30 (UNI) Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) General Secretary Praven Togadia today threatened the UPA government with a country-wide delegation if it did not declare the Ram Sethu a protected historic national heritage and Rameshwaram a pious holy city.
In a resolution passed during the Rameshwaram Ram Sethu Raksha Mahasammelan being held at the Swaran Jayanti Park here, Mr Togadia gave an ultimatum to the Centre to give effect to the above mentioned demands by January 16.
Addressing more than 6 lakh people from across the nation gathered here at the Mahasamelan, Mr Togadia said, ''the defection of the Ram Sethu would create severe security risk for the country through the entire south and south east coastline in view of the ISI links with many terror groups operating from Indonesia and Malaysia and via Srilanka upto Nepal.'' He also ridiculed the UPA governemnt for creating 10,000 jobs by virtually killing the livelihood of 10 lakh fishermen, as a mockery of development. Mr Togadia added that scientifically also it was now proven that breaking of this ancient bridge could lead to the possibility of a devastating Tsunami.
The building of the SethuSamudran Shipping Canal (SSCP) was actually a vote-bagging effort by the government to please the minorities. He also lambasted the groups involved in spreading the message that Hindus were against development.
''The same groups never ever questioned the development of the other religious structures or issues. For instance, to protect Qutub Minar, a metro route was extended through, which led to extra cost. Similary, to protect Mumbai's Haji Ali, the Bandra, the hi-fi Worli sea bridge was diverted.'' The VHP Gen Secy alo questioned that if Hinduism and development could not go together than why was there no farmer suicide in India Pre-Islam and Pre-Imperial rule? '' Political parties shall stop being hypocrites by allowing farmer suicides and fertile land grabbing in the name of SEZs and malls,'' he added.
