PM assures Christians of religious freedom, warns rioteers

New Delhi, Dec 30 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who today reviewed the Orissa situation with the state Chief Minister, assured the Christian community of full security and protection of their religious freedom.

Speaking to a delegation of Christian leaders led by Archbishop Rev. Vincent M. Conscessao which called on him here this evening, the Prime Minister also promised appropriate compensation for damage to their property during the violence that broke out on the Christmas eve.

A Union Minister will visit the State in this regard soon, he said.

The Prime Minister expressed his deep concern at the recent incidents and assured the community leaders of necessary action in restoring communal peace and harmony in the affected areas, the Prime Minister's Office said.

Dr Singh assured the delegation that any attempts to disturb communal peace and the secular fabric of the country would be dealt with sternly.

He said the Government would take steps to provide full security and protect the religious freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution to all citizens.
