Shillong, Dec 30 (UNI) It is not only through good food, music and fireworks, but the people of Meghalaya are all set to welcome 2008 in the most adventurous fashion.
In the capital city, the Meghalaya Tourism Development Front (MTDF) would organise an open-air concert - ''Live and Let Live'' - at Khyndai-lad, the commercial hub, featuring US-based Difference United pop group and Nova sanctum, a rock group comprising musicians from Kolkata and Meghalaya.
Popular local bands - Colours, Akhia, Snowhite, Gracyl Ropmay and Rana Kharkongor - among others, will also take the centre stage to serenade music lovers in this hill state to welcome 2008.
Besides, 1,000 couples will assemble at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to party with music and binge on sumptuous food.
''The concert will attract more people even from the neighbouring states,'' MTDF vice-chairman Larsing Ming Sawain told UNI here.
Mr Sawain said most of the hotels in the city were packed with tourists from different states and abroad, flocking here to celebrate the week-long festivities.
''We had come here for the Christmas celebrations only, but now we have decided to celebrate New Year as well in Shillong,'' a German tourist, here said.
The state police also placed adequate security arrangements to ensure that the celebrations passed off peacefully.
Besides the open-air concert, other hotels in the city also arranged various programmes. At 'Cloud Nine', the Centre Point Entertainment Network will organise a DJ Night.
Meanwhile, a group of adventurers would take a midnight dip at upper Shillong at an altitude of 1,800 metres above sea level. An estimated 20-30 swimmers would plunge into the freezing Sangmein River at Upper Shillong near Shillong peak.
''The swimmers belong to the age group of 20-50 years,'' Forever Young sports' club member Michael Syiem, who would participate in the adventure for the 11th consecutive year, said.
