Manipur Cabinet approves state police upgradation programme

Imphal, Dec 30 (UNI) With a view to strengthening the state police force, the Manipur Cabinet has decided to recruit about 1,165 additional police personnel.

Official sources said here today the Cabinet also decided to review the cost of the Khuga Multi-purpose Project at Churachandpur district.

The Cabinet, presided over by Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, met last evening and decided to initiate an enquiry into the awarding of contracts worth about Rs 29 crores for the Khuga project, the sources said, adding that the work was not in the approved list.

The Khuga Multi-purpose Project, which is in its final stages of completion, will cost about Rs 335 crores instead of the approved Rs 294 crore due to cost escalation. The Cabinet decided to sanction the necessary amount for completion of the project.

The Cabinet further decided to construct a ten feet tall statue of Thangal General at the Traffic Island near the Palace Gate here.

Thangal General was executed by the British Empire on August 13, 1891, at Imphal for waging war against the empire.

The Wakf Board rules would also be amended as decided by the Cabinet, the sources added.
