TN to have two more Corporations, Tirupur, Erode upgraded

Erode, Dec 29 (UNI) The upgradation of Tirupur and Erode Municipalities into Corporations today by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has increased the total number of Corporations in the state to eight.

Hitherto the state had six Corporations-Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli and Salem.

The number of districts in the state would also soon go upto 32 as the Chief Minister announced that Tirupur would also be carved out into a separate district.

Recently, the government created Ariyalur as a new district carving it out from Perambalur.

Inaugurating the Tirupur Corporation, Mr Karunanidhi said the proposed Tirupur district would be carved from Coimbatore district.

An official announcement with regard to the formation of the district would be made in the assembly, either by the Governor in his address to the assembly or in the Budget for the year 2008-09 to be unveiled during February-March, he said.
