Tirupur to be made separate district soon: CM

Tirupur, Dec 29 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said a new district would be carved out here with Tirupur town as its district headquarters.

Inaugurating the Tirupur Corporation here, he said an official announcement in this regard would be made in the coming Assembly session after the revenue ministry submitted a detailed report.

The government would allocate Rs five crore to Tirupur corporation for setting up infrastructural facilities, he said.

Listing out various developmental schemes undertaken by the government in Tirupur, the Chief Minister said only in his government a hosiery worker could become a mayor.

He said when his party won the first mayoral election in Chennai, Mr Arasu, a printing press worker, was made the Mayor of Chennai city.

Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister M K Stalin said a zonal-level meeting would be held to elicit views from Panchayats to providing more powers to them.

His ministry would submit a detailed report of the meeting before the Chief Minister for an announcement, he added.
