Suspected female infanticide case in TN

Madurai, Dec 29 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Health Department has ordered a police inquiry into the mysterious death of a five-day-old female baby, suspecting it to be case of female infanticide.

Official sources said the Virkamangalam Maternity Welfare Officer S Vasanthi had given a written complaint to the police seeking a detailed probe into the death of the baby girl on December 17, last.

The baby weighing 3.15 kg was quite healthy at the time of delivery by her mother Valarmathi, wife of Kasinathan of Kalikkanpatti Village, at the Thenbavani Hospital near here on December 12.

The death of the baby girl raised doubts that it might be a suspected female infanticide case. Moreover, the baby's parents cremated the body.Police have registered a case in this connection.

Incidence of female infanticide was common in Vikramangalam. The poor families used to kill their female babies by feeding them poisonous seed juice and in other ways.
