Mandya, Karnataka, Dec 29 (UNI) Traffic on the busy Bangalore-Mysore state highway was affected for nearly three hours following a protest by sugar cane growers who are demanding higher support price for their crop.
The protest was led by a group of farmers' organisations staged dharna blocking traffic at Banakanhalli near here throwing traffic out of gear leaving thousands of vehicles stranded on either side of the four lane highway.
Following the protest KSRTC suspended its operation from Mysore, while vehicles from Bangalore side was diverted towards Malavalli from Maddur town. Similarly all vehicular from Mysore side was diverted to travel via Malavalli-Kanakapura route. Normalcy was restored only by afternoon, officials said.
More then 150 agitating farmers were taken into custody by the police and later released.
Mandya additional SP Krishna Raju and other top officials were camping at the spot.
