Erode, Dec 29 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today launched the sixth phase of free land distribution scheme and distribution of free house site pattas to the poor.

As announced in the party's election manifesto, the DMK government, soon after assuming office in May last year, had launched the first phase of the scheme on September 17, coinciding with the birth anniversary of rationalist leader Periyar E V Ramasamy.

Since then, the government implemented five phases and had distributed 1,33,688 acres of land to 1,16,508 landless poor farmers in the state.

In the sixth phase, the government proposed to distribute 28,230 acres of land to poor and landless farm workers throughout the state.

Similarly, the government was distributing free house site pattas to the poor and till November 30, it had distributed 2.5 lakh house site pattas.

To achieve the target of distributing three lakh house site pattas during this year, the Chief Minister launched the scheme to distribute 50,000 house site pattas to the poor at a function organised here to inaugurate the Erode Corporation.

Mr Karunanidhi's cabinet colleagues would launch the schemes in various districts in the state tomorrow.

While K Anbazhagan would launch the scheme in Villupuram district, Arcot N Veerasamy and M K Stalin would launch the schemes in Coimbatore and Krishnagiri districts respectively.
