New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) Chanakya, one of the prominent movie theatres of Delhi and the last remnants of the "chic and stylish" single screen cinema halls of the 70s, will become a part of cinematic history of the Capital from tomorrow.

One of the earliest cinema halls in Delhi to screen Hollywood films way back in the late 70s, Chanakya will screen its last two shows this evening.

After five years of legal dispute with the New Delhi Municipal Council, Chanakya will down shutters from tomorrow following the Delhi high court order that the theatre complex be handed over to the NDMC following expiry of the 30 year lease on which it was given to the owners three decades ago.

Along with the closure of the theatre, the Nirula's outlet housed in the two acre complex will shut down too.

According to sources in the NDMC, a multiplex and shopping mall will come up in the area where the Chanakya cinema today stands.

One of the prime cinema halls in Delhi in the 70s which screened, along with Archana cinema and Regal cinema halls, Hollywood films and hosted screenings of International Film Festival of India, Chanakya opened on December 17, 1970, with the premiere of Raj Kapoor's 'Mera Naam Joker'.

Chanakya was one of the two cinema halls in the 70s and 80s to screen the latest Hollywood films for the lovers of western cinema.

Infact, it was among the few cinema halls, along with those like Sangam, Vishal and delite cinema hall which survived the multiplex revolution in the late 90s and the new millennium by effecting a major makeover of the cinema complex, making it one of the prime venue for those wanting to watch films in a chic environment but at an affordable price.

Unlike multiplexes, the ticket prices of Chanakya are much cheaper - while the front stall ticket costs Rs 30, the rear stall is priced at Rs 70 and balcony tickets at Rs 100, all of which makes it a much cheaper entertainment option compared to a multiplex.

Infact, the cinema hall has been screening the latest Bollywood blockbuster. Cuurently, it is showing the Akshay Kumar Anil Kapoor- starrer 'Welcome' and the Aamir Khan-starrer 'Taare Zameen Par', both of which have been running to packed houses since their release on Friday.
