Mumbai, Dec 26 (UNI) Slum dwellers, under the banner of ''National Alliance for People's Movement'', raised slogans to protest the Maharashtra Government's decision to repeal the Urban Land Ceiling Act (ULCA) at the Azad Maidan here today.
Activist Medha Patkar, who is spearheading the campaign, said ''The repealing of the ULCA has freed more than 3,000 acres of land in the city that the government wants to give to the builders at throwaway prices inspite of the poor being ready to pay to the government the cost they have accepted from the builders.'' The slum dwellers had deposited Rs 2,000 as payment for 230 acres of land in Kurla for building houses for the poor as the same land has been sold to a builder for a very low amount, she claimed.
Patkar said the government policies ''are anti-poor and the poor will not be benefitted by the ULCA repeal as announced by the government.'' UNI JN SR SY BST1952
