Tiruchirapalli, Dec 26 (UNI) Members of the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangam (BKS) staged a demonstration semi-naked, sporting a 'namam' on their forehead before the Collectorate here today, urging the Centre and the State government to fix Rs 1,000 per quintal of paddy as Minimum Support Price (MSP).
The Sangam's General Secretary P Ayyakannu, who led the demonstration, alleged that the Union Government was meting out step-motherly treatment to the paddy farmers by providing more MSP for wheat and announcing a low MSP for the paddy. It was highly condemnable, he added.
Mr Ayyakannu contradicted the recent statement of the Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram with regard to the procurement price for wheat and said the government gets good returns by procuring wheat, as one sided.
He questioned Mr Chidambaram's claim and said paddy also yielded good returns. It was high time the Centre announced Rs 1,000 per quintal as MSP for paddy, he added.
He said if the government continues to deny the demand of paddy farmers, they would fall into debt trap and commit suicide.
Later, a delegation led by Mr Ayyakannu, met the District Collector and submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
