Barrackpore, Dec 26 (UNI) West Bengal Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta today stressed on the development of small industry to resolve the unemployment problem in the state.
Speaking at the inauguration of the week-long Panihati Fair-2007 at Amarabati Maidan at Sodepur, the Minister observed that the imposition of new economic policy in the name of globalisation facilitated the imperialists to capture the Indian market.
''With the imposition of this policy imperialists are destabilising our big industry leaving lakhs of people jobless and during the last five years the number of unemployment rose to about 90 lakh,'' he said.
Dr Dasgupta, who preferred development of macro economy, said the big industry in the country lost its market with the invasion of innumerable foreign goods.
The Minister was also critical against the tendency of consumerism and self-centered attitude being adopted by the people destroying cultural heritage. Echoing the views of film director Tarun Majumder, who inaugurated the fair, Dr Dasgupta said that people should abjure the tendency of consumerism and stand for maintaining national cultural heritage.
