Troops destroy militant camp at Manipur

Imphal, Dec 25 (UNI) Security forces in Manipur today busted a major camp of militants in Chandel district and recovered a huge quantity of explosives.

The PRO of Assam Rifles (AR) said since the past one year, troops had launched a major offensive against the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) in Chandel district.

Helicopters were pressed into service to supply ammunition to the troops enaged in counter-insurgency offensive in the district.

The PRO said Major General B K Chengapa, IGAR (South), was supervising the operations in the area.

The UNLF had claimed that it had killed more than 24 soldiers while the Army had claimed that it had killed more than six militants.

Maj Gen Chengapa reviewed the progress of the operations and exhorted the troops to continue their good work.

The general officer complemented troops for their success in the ongoing 'Samtal Operation' and praised them for not causing any civilian casualty and progressing rapidly.

The PRO said the militants had been fleeing the 'Liberated Zone', adding that they had suffered heavy setbacks.

After destroying the hideout, the security forces recovered eight kgs explosive PEK, one RPG, eight magazines, nine fired cases of lathod, 15 blankets, batteries and other materials used by them.

The Major General assured the villagers that the AR would do every thing possible for the welfare of the people living in the area.
