Asansol, Dec 25 (UNI) The Centre has prepared a growth plan to enhance the annual steel production from 14.6 million tonnes to 26 million tonnes by 2010 with an investment of Rs 53,000 crores, Steel Minister Ramvilas Paswan said today.
Inaugurating the Kulti unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) at Kulti near here, the Minister said out of this investment, SAIL was planning to invest about Rs 20,000 crores in West Bengal only.
Mr Paswan said out of allotted Rs 5000 crores for the new unit named Sail Growth Works, Rs 2000 crores were invested in the first phase.
Criticising the NDA government for closing down many factories during their tenure, he claimed that the UPA government reopened a number of closed factories during only three and half years time.
He also informed that the Government has granted Rs 4500 crores for reopening of Bengal Chemicals.
Speaking on the occasion, External Affair Minister Pranab Mukherjee stressed on self-sufficiency in the power sector and observed that nuclear power was essential for the development of the country.
He criticised the Left Front government as well as the opposition parties for opposing to spare land for road construction. He also advocated for six lanes road on National Highway-34.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi were among other distinguished personalities who graced the occasion.
