Panaji, Dec 25 (UNI) Christmas was celebrated with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm in Goa, the erstwhile Portuguese colony where Catholic Christian community constitutes a large section among the populace.
The people in their best attire welcomed the arrival of Zesus Christ through midnight masses, tolling of bells and special prayers as all the churches and world heritage monuments had been tastefully illuminated on the occasion.
An atmosphere of bonhomie prevailed with people of other communities, greeting and hugging Christians and distributing sweets and cakes. Every Christian house was richly decorated with decorations.
Meanwhile, foreign and domestic tourists thronged the state to enjoy Christmas and the New Year, even as the authorities took all measures to ensure an incident free and peaceful season.
Goa Governor SC Jamir, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and the leader of Opposition extended their warm greetings to the people on the occasion.
