Port Blair, Dec 24: The BJP's woman wing today alleged that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was playing tricks with the Indian women by completely neglecting their common interests.
Addressing mediapersons here, president of the BJP women's wing Kiran Maheshwari targetted the Congress president on the issues of inflation, Ram Sethu and Women's Reservation Bill. ''Ms Gandhi got a huge number of votes from Indian women but instead of working for the uplift of women, she is promoting her own family members,'' Ms Maheshwari told reporters before leaving for Kolkata.
Regarding the Women's Reservation Bill, she said the true empowerment of women was not possible unless and until the women were given 33 per cent reservation in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies.
''The NDA government had at least placed the Bill twice in Parliament but even after nearly four years of its rule, the UPA government has not even discussed the Women's Reservation Bill,'' she added.
Ms Maheshwari alleged that the UPA government had hurt the people's sentiments by saying that Lord Ram never existed in connection with the Sethusamudram Project conflict.
She informed that the BJP women's wing would organise a mass rally in front of the Lok Sabha on February 21 to voice its concern over the inordinate delay in the enactment of the Women's Reservation Bill, adding that more than two lakh women were expected to participate in the rally.
Replying to a query, Ms Maheswari said the BJP supported formation of Assembly in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
''There is immense potential for the development of tourism in these islands but it needs to be promoted in right earnest,'' she said.
